John-Burke-Everest-5 REPRO FREE Everest mountaineer dedicates achievement to young people battling mental health challenges John Burke returns to hero’s welcome at Shannon Airport Friday, 19 May 2017: Everest mountaineer John Burke returned to a rousing Shannon Airport and Co. Clare welcome today and dedicated his triumph to young people going through personal challenges. Just six days after he became the first Co. Clare man to reach the summit, the 38 year-old said that his big motivation for taking on the mammoth and dangerous challenge was to prove to young people that anything is achievable if they put their mind to it. The proprietor of one of the Wild Atlantic Way’s best known hotels, the Armada Hotel in Spanish Point, and his wife Aoibhín have established a charity, Elevate, to promote wellbeing among young people and provide encouragement to them to reach their potential and follow their dreams in life. And on his return at Shannon Airport, he said that the mental health of young people and the challenges posed by blunt end of social media are amongst the greatest issues facing Ireland today. Shannon-College-Volunteer-1 NO REPRO FEES Shannon College of Hotel Management Celebrate First Student Volunteering Award Shannon College of Hotel Management presents the 2017 NUI Galway President’s Award for Student Volunteering at a special ceremony on Tuesday 10th April from 12pm. The 2017 recipients have volunteered in a range of local community projects, fundraised for a variety of causes and participated in campus cultural programmes. Dr Phillip Smyth said, “We are delighted to celebrate the student’s commitments as we strive to encourage an ethos of volunteerism within young people, who have a real appetite to engage in community. This is our first year to award the students with certificates of recognition and we look forward to building the volunteering programme with students.” Partnering with the Clare Volunteer Centre, all students in the College are given a welcome information talk about volunteering opportunities in County Clare from festivals, retail, sport and music there is an opportunity for everyone to participate in a passion or interest area. April Whelan, Student Services Officer, oversaw a drive to get students more involved in on-campus activities. The College GAA team was reborn and entered the Munster Junior Football Championship. She said "I am so proud that our students are being recognised for their efforts this year, the volunteer spirit and promoting of clubs and societies is invaluable in enhancing the student experience and promoting our ethos here at Shannon College of Hotel Management. The benefits of volunteering are experienced by students, particularly international students who reflect on community participation as a way to share their culture, meet new people and aid in settling into College in Ireland. Students also share that volunteering with the GAA helped them to have a physical and mental health outlet while studying full time. In order to achieve the award students complete a reflection portfolio sharing learning from their experiences. Student Diveena Thakur, volunteered through a number of charity fundraisers with Epilepsy Ireland and Novas, saying “Volunteering helped me grow as a person, it gave me the opportunity to share my love.
